Determining which companies are leaders and which are laggards has been a passion of mine for decades.
Recently I’ve been thrilled to meet and work with a kindred spirit – Jane Arnott MNZM, Director of The Ethics Conversation. Jane and I worked together on a submission to the ‘NZX Corporate Governance Code Review’ (see my blog of 15 Feb 2022) and a further submission in September 2022. Our positive impact on the review is discussed in my blog of 1 June 2023.
In December 2022 Jane published an excellent research report titled ‘Codes vs Commitment: An Assessment of the Codes of Ethics of the NZX50’. In the report, Jane drills into the substance of NZX50 Codes of Ethics with a level of scrutiny that is of great value to investors and businesses.
The report brings to light some star performers and, unfortunately but perhaps not unsurprisingly, a number of laggards. According to her research only 32% of the NZX50 are high achievers. Jane’s report states that: ‘A massive 68% of the NZX50 are caught up in the lower league with a rating of 5 or below. Of this 18% are somewhat mobilised and rest in the middle’.
In a comprehensive and highly informative interview being released as part of Ethical Investment Week 2023 Jane shares her views about the state of business ethics in New Zealand and how this can be raised. We’re pleased to be able to offer you the interview and the full report for download. See who best demonstrates ethical integrity, and gain insight into what’s expected of companies who want to demonstrate ethical leadership.
It’s my view that all investors and businesses can gain real value from learning and applying the insights provided in this interview, Jane’s report and our presentation to the NZX.
