Inaugural Financial Planner Of The Year, 1999
This award, initiated by Good Returns, assessed entrants for their competency, professionalism, communication skills, knowledge of current issues and input to the profession. The judging panel included financial journalist Mary Holm, and then-Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank (and current Chair of the Climate Change Commission) Rod Carr.

Rodger Spiller was recognised as best adviser when the Good Returns Financial Planner of the Year award was first introduced, highlighting his expertise as New Zealand’s foremost adviser. He was also recognised as best ethical adviser when the Mindful Money’s Best Ethical Adviser Award was first introduced.
In subsequent years, the judges for both of these awards decided to recognise other advisers in order to promote a diverse range of talent in the industry, rather than continuing to award Dr Spiller given his already high profile and clear leadership. Although Dr Spiller is therefore no longer entering these awards, he and his firm, Money Matters, remain widely regarded as New Zealand's foremost ethical investment adviser. This recognition reflects his unparalleled experience and education, as well as his ongoing commitment to leadership through Money Matters.

Certified Financial Planner (CFP) is the most respected global ethical financial planning certification. Certified Financial Planner professionals meet initial and ongoing education, experience and professional development requirements. They pass an exam that assesses competency and adhere to a code of ethics – pledging to provide financial planning in the interests of clients and with the highest ethical and professional standards. The CFP certification mark is owned outside the U.S. by Financial Planning Standards Board Ltd. Financial Advice New Zealand Inc. is the licensing authority for CFP marks in New Zealand, via an agreement with FPSB.
Trusted Adviser
The Trusted Adviser mark is awarded to Financial Advice New Zealand members who have committed to qualifications and continuing professional development at a level higher than that required by New Zealand law and code. It demonstrates that an adviser’s level of qualifications, experience and ethics has been recognised by a professional body. Financial Advice New Zealand is a professional membership organisation that strives to help New Zealanders, and New Zealand as a whole, be financially better-off.
Accredited Investment Fiduciary®
Dr Rodger Spiller is an Accredited Investment Fiduciary®. He has completed the training on fiduciary standards of care, including the legal and regulatory requirements for managing investment decisions on behalf of others. The training required includes knowledge of the Fiduciary Prudent Practices and how to apply them, understanding of the fiduciary standards of excellence, and how to strengthen fiduciary policies and procedures. Rodger undertakes ongoing education as part of maintaining this designation. This accreditation is undertaken by Fi360 Pacfic that partners with USA based Fi360.
